Nutella French Toast

Yesterday I posted this post. This morning, as promised, I attempted the Nutella French Toast Recipe. It was AMAZING. The Nutella was not overpowering, and it was incredibly easy to make. It only required about one extra step than my normal french toast recipe. The strawberries were also amazing. This recipe has you soak the strawberries in a lemon and sugar mix. So yummy! I did make one minor change to this recipe. The recipe calls for thick toast like some french toast recipes do, but Joel and I had just gotten regular thin sliced bread at the store the day before, so I used that. The recipe originally had you make a pocket in the thick bread for the Nutella. Instead, since I can't easily cut a slice into already thin-sliced bread, I just folded one slice over. I made sure not to break the bread where the fold was, and I filled the middle with Nutella.

Strawberry + Lemon Juice Topping
1 cup sliced strawberries
2 teaspoons sugar
Juice of half a lemon
Combine the strawberries, sugar and lemon juice in a bowl. Toss to coat and set aside to macerate at room temperature.
French Toast
4 thick slices (1 1/2 to 2-inches) bread, such as challah or soft Italian bread
About 1/2 cup Nutella
1 large egg
3/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Powdered sugar for serving
Heat a pan over stove on medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the heated skillet and swirl to coat.
Fold over one slice of bread, and fill each slice of bread with about two tablespoons of Nutella. In a flat dish, whisk together the egg and milk. Whisk in the melted butter and vanilla. Add the flour, cinnamon and salt and whisk until smooth. Working with one or two pieces at a time, place the filled slices into the egg mixture. Soak for each side for just a few seconds, and place into pan. Brown on both sides for each slice. Serve on a plate topped with strawberries and powdered sugar. Let cool before serving
